Did someone say Trail & Challenge … here comes the rain!

At the end of last week the team held the first of 8 Trail & Challenge events for year 4 & 5 pupils for first, primary & middle schools from  across the borough. Friday 4th October proved to be a testing day for the pupuls due to the wet weather but it certainly did not dampen the spirits of the pupils from Balliol, Forest Hall, Hadrian Park, Christ Church, Monkhouse & Westmoor! Some children were even singing as they orienteered!

The idea behind these events are simple! They are Outdoor and Adventure themed events with an orienteering focus. The children participating, work in groups and use maps and simple orienteering equipment, navigating from one point to another to locate a variety of places on the site. There will be some competitive elements to the events but they are very much focused on teamwork, using and developing their directional skills, participation in some physical activity and enjoying spending some time outdoors with their peers!

The children attempt to locate 16 sites and use the stamps to make impresses on their score card with these as well as ensuring they can make it back to the visitors centre within a time frame. Although there is some competitive element, the event is much more than this.

Staff from Christ Church said “The children loved every minute! We got wet and muddy but demonstrated some excellent team sills and amazing orienteering skills too. A fantastic day, well done year 5! “
