Reframing Competition

Over 90 young people in years 3, 4, 5 & 6 joined the team at the Evolution Football Centre for the boys Dogdeball & girls Football Central Venue leagues (CVLs) on Tuesday evening.

The PE team believe that the secondary CVL format that has been running for the last few years has worked so successfully, that a similar format would be introduced into the primary calendar of events this academic year.

Both sports run alongside one another but the difference with these leagues are that they are not about team scores and results. They are about coming together to play some sport, giving the children involved a good & meaningful experience of competition, with the aim of potentionally engaging a different group of young people. The ones who may not usually be picked to represent the school.

This is in line with the “Reframing Competition” campaign produced by the School Games which builds on the vision and mission of the programme. It looks to tackle some of the negative experiences that exist within competition, when there is an over-emphasis on the outcome. The team are hoping that this is embedded within both leagues week on week.

To ensure that the young people gain confidence and new skills through these competitions, where possible we will try and “match up” teams appropriately. This has been driven by the High Quality Principles of Competition & SMILES.

8 schools were involved on Tuesday and there are 7 more are still to get in on the action! There are 4 more dates ahead of us and want to continue creating the right atmosphere that was set on Tuesday.
