Personal Best Challenge with SMILE Through Sport
On Wednesday the team worked with SMILE Through Sport to deliver the PMLD Personal Best Challenge day, which was a new event in the 2019/2020 calendar. The event was aimed at young people with limited movement and/or those with complex and profound learning disabilities. The idea was for young people to come along and participate in various of activities which would be adapted to the needs of the individuals, to ensure that success would be achieved. The young people had a go at each activity twice throughout the day and the aim was to see how they could improve & achieve their personal best. Points were awarded for not only making an attempt or completing a task but also for engaging, looking & listening.
The event warranted a small entry event due to high staff to pupil ratio and was for North Tyneside and Newcastle schools The organisers were joined by 17 young people from Benton Dene School, Percy Hedley School & Hadrian School.
Year 13 students from Kings Priory supported the event by leading and adapting the activities and providing support to the young people. They helped them to access the activity & ultimately achieve their personal best. Some of the students really stood out and took a lot away from the day.
Joanne Yarrow, PE Coordinator at Benton Dene School said;
“Its been a great day for the three young people that we brought along. You can see that they have really gained a lot from taking part in activities within this environment. They have really come out of their shell & have given the activities a good go. The students have been excellent too and have interacted really well with them”
As this was a new event, we will as always look to amend and adapt the format through feedback received for future events.
