North Tyneside Champs!
The North Tyneside minor athletics team were winners of Dunosian Cup on the 22nd June 2019 at the Northumberland School’s Athletics Championships at Gateshead Stadium. Boys and girls in years 6, 7 & 8 from North Tyneside primary, middle and secondary schools represented the area, competing in various track and field events, coming up against the strongest athletes from across Northumberland.
The students who made up the team, were selected following their performances at the North Tyneside competitions in the summer term. At the Northumberland Championships students competed in their selected events & their performances equated to individual points scores. These scores then contributed to a team table for each of the boys and girls age categories.
The year 6 & 7 boys teams collectively finished runners up of the points table as well as each of the girls teams & the year 8 boys team, who collectively finishing top of the points tables, meaning that North Tyneside became the overall winners!
This is the first time the area have won the championships and is a fantastic achievement finishing ahead of the teams from Newcastle, Tynedale, North & East Northumberland. This is down to each individual performance & demonstrates the outstanding young talent we have across the area, some of whom are not linked to an athletics club or do not train or compete in athletics outside of school. This looks promising for the future of athletics in North Tyneside and in years to come when they begin to make their way onto the English School’s Athletics pathway.
